Fans say the wrong person won Survivor NZ

Avi took out the title - but did he play the best game? Viewers of last night's Survivor NZ finale say no.

Wellington overseas educator Avi Max Duckor-Jones won $100,000 and the title of Sole Survivor over the other finalists Barb and Tom during last night's tense finale.

But many were more concerned with the treatment of Barb during the final tribal council, where an alleged "selfish" attitude and superior demeanour around camp were criticised by jury members.

Most critical was Sala, who described Barb as a "turd who wouldn't flush down the toilet".

Things got even worse during the live recap, as it was revealed even more harsh words were spoken during tribal council towards Barb but didn't make it to air.

Fans quickly took to Twitter to declare the comments too harsh.

Many claimed ageism and sexism had come into play, and if the same thing happened on Survivor US, Barb would have won.

The outcry continued on Facebook, with one saying: "Barb played the game like we all want to ... Her balls are that big she had to strap them to her chest. Jury were a bunch of sore losers that got schooled by barb."

Another told Avi to: "Give half that money to Barb" because "she orchestrated his win".

Despite his harsh words for Barb, Sala was declared the winner of the People's Choice award.

After Avi took out the title, Barb was nothing but gracious towards the winner.

"Avi is our Fred Astaire Sole Survivor, a true gentleman who dances a beautiful partnership with any of his tribemates. Open, trusting and with an empathy I appreciated at times," she said.

"I am 100 per cent happy for Avi and I want to thank him for being who I thought he was."

A second season hasn't yet been confirmed by TVNZ.
