Fans rage over Thrones finale omission (spoilers)

Game of Thrones fans have turned to Twitter to voice their disappointment at a major omission from Monday night's season finale.

While many moments from the last episode of season four - including Tyrion killing his dad Tywin, and Brienne's grisly fight with The Hound - were met with approval, fans of the books say their was one glaring omission.

* Do not keep reading if you do not want to know a potential spoiler from an upcoming episode of Game of Thrones.

That comes in the form of Lady Stoneheart, a zombie character based on actress Michelle Fairley's character Catelyn Stark, who was killed during season three's dramatic massacre The Red Wedding.

Vulture.com reports Lady Stoneheart appears in the epilogue to GRR Martin's Thrones novel A Storm of Swords.

Much of Thrones' fourth season was based on the second half of A Storm of Swords.

Many fans thought Lady Stoneheart would make an appearance in the finale - especially after this tweet from actress Lena Heady (Cersei) appeared on April 22:

When asked by Jimmy Fallon if her photo was a reference to Lady Stoneheart, Heady replied: "No, that was me drunk in Palm Springs going, 'This is so pretty'."

Fans took to Twitter to discuss the omission, which many thought would have been the perfect ending to season four.

Sure, okay, whatever. It's not like ending the season with Lady Stoneheart would have been kickass or anything. #GameOfThrones

The more I think about Lady Stoneheart the more annoyed I get

But the episode's director Alex Graves told Vulture that Lady Stoneheart "was never going to be a part of it".

"I know it caught on on the internet, and people really started to believe it," he said.

"I think the bottom line is that there was so much going on, at least from where I stood, that it wasn't something to get into because, you know, when you get into taking Michelle Fairley, one of the greatest actresses around, and making her a zombie who doesn't speak and goes around killing people, what's the best way to integrate that into the show?"

"I don't think there was room for it this season. I don't know what they're going to do about it, because it is certainly something people are attached to ... I have no idea what they plan to do about that because honestly, it just wasn't talked about. It wasn't on the radar."
