After five seasons the much-loved comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been cancelled by Fox, leaving fans devastated.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine earned two Golden Globe awards in its inaugural season for Best TV Series - Comedy or Musical and Best Actor in a Comedy for Samberg.
Despite its accolades, Fox confirmed the cultcop comedy starring Andy Samberg and Terry Crews has been shelved due to a continuous drop in ratings.
Up until the last minute, the show's stars were all hopeful that they would get a renewal for a sixth season, however their hopes have now been shattered by the confirmation of the show's cancellation.
Speaking about the possibility of a season renewal, Samberg said:
"I'm obviously hopeful. I love making it. I think we've had an incredible season. I feel really proud of the episodes. I feel like we've had a really nice upswell culturally.
"There was a lot of attention around the 99th episode and we got a lot of love during the Olympics, which was really cool. And there was a lot of really beautiful attention paid to the development with Rosa [Stephanie Beatriz] coming out as bi.
"I certainly feel we're in a good place, but as to whether or not we get more, that's obviously far beyond my reach. But fingers crossed."
Since the confirmation of the show's axing, fans have taken the news hard with many expressing their sadness and anger on social media, including actress and Stephanie Beatriz who played Detective Rosa Diaz on the show.
Squad, we love you. What a gift this series has been: it’s been my honor. Your sadness is noted. NINE- NINE! pic.twitter.com/qAcOYfpNZh
Brooklyn 99, a diverse, inoffensive, and truly hilarious show with a group of characters that genuinely love and care for each other. Why the hell is it being cancelled?
Brooklyn Nine-Nine was created by the Parks and Recreation duo of Dan Goor and Michael Schur and focused on Det. Jake Peralta (Samberg) - an odd ball who made a great detective.
The show also starred Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz, Chelsea Peretti, Joel McKinnon Miller and Dirk Blocker.
