Breaking free from a career in classical crossover was never going to be easy for Lizzie Marvelly -- too subtle a shift and no one notices; too radical and she will lose all those fans who kickstarted her career.
On Collisions, her first EP as Lizzie (not Elizabeth), she carefully treads the fine line of reinvention with tracks tinged with pop.
The Kiwi singer channels her inner Kylie on sparkly pink anthem My Own Hero, flirts with LeAnn Rimes-esque country-pop in the chorus on the catchy title track, pays tribute to her classical roots on Letting Go and soars in the ballad, Glory Days. But it's her ode to youth, Generation Young, that's the stand-out track. It's a promising pop debut that proves Marvelly has the vocal goods. But it's what she follows this mini-album up with that will matter most. I, for one, hope she shakes it all out, sheds the "popera" shadow and goes for gold in full-on fabulous Kylie style.
