Ouch.
Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and The Rolling Stones have all previously performed during the Super Bowl, which draws a worldwide audience of more than a billion people.
But John says he's never been that taken with the halftime entertainment.
"I've never seen a decent one," he said. "Never ever," but then changed his mind, conceding that he saw "the Stones and I saw Prince and I thought they were pretty good".
"You have to play live, but I don't think you can," he said. "In all fairness to everyone who's done one before, you may be able to sing live, but it's really hard to play live."

The set list for Madonna's 12-minute extravaganza hasn't been officially confirmed, but NFL magazine may have already let the cat out of the bag.
CBS Sports reveals that the mag wrote: "Though Madonna's set list was not officially announced at press time, fans might expect her to give all her luvin', provide a ray of light and be in vogue with her music."
Give Me All Your Luvin is Madge's collaboration featuring Nicki Minaj & M.I.A., and the first single to be lifted from her new album, MDNA.
The Material Girl will also be joined on stage by party-rockers LMFAO, according to Will.i.am.
Speaking to Capital FM about Madge's halftime show, he said: "I'm going to the Super Bowl this year to see my group LMFAO perform with Madonna."
He added, "Check that out, Will.i.am Music Group is pretty freaking two for two. One year the Super Bowl, the next year another group part of the Super Bowl in collaboration with Madonna. That's still happening."
'No nipples'
Madge recently dished on her anxiety ahead of the gig, which has also been steered by the creative directors behind Cirque Du Soleil.
"Oh my god, I'm so nervous. You have no idea," she told talk show host Anderson Cooper this week.
"First of all, it's the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is kind of like the holiest of holy in America. I'm going to come in halfway between the church experience and I'm going to have to deliver a sermon that's going to have to be very impactful.
"I have to put on the greatest show on earth in the middle of the greatest show on earth."
She's also worried about her timing.
"I have eight minutes to set it up and seven minutes to take it down," she said. "I have 12 minutes to put on the greatest show on earth. Okay, that's a lot of pressure."
Madge also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday. And while she remained tight-lipped about what she will perform, she let slip that there won't be any theatrics of the nipple-flashing variety.
"For sure no nipples," Madge quipped, referring to Janet Jackson's now legendary 'wardrobe malfunction'. "But I wasn't gonna go there. I mean, I don't like to repeat myself."

John's latest stab at Madge follows his sniping at the Golden Globes two weeks ago.
When questioned before the ceremony about his competition for Best Original Song, John opined that Madge would walk away empty-handed.
"Mary J [Blige] might win for The Help - Madonna hasn't got a f****ng chance," he said.
When she scooped the award, John's hubby David Furnish took to the internet to vent his disgust.
"Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!" wrote an irate Furnish on Facebook.
"Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is."
Furnish later apologised for his rant.
"Wow! What a tempest in a teapot," he later wrote. "My comments regarding The Golden Globes have been blown way out of proportion. My passion for our film Gnomeo & Juliet and belief in Elton's song really got my emotional juices going. But I must say for the record that I do believe Madonna is a great artist, and that Elton and I wish her all the best for next week's premiere of the film W.E."
If John's "lip-sync" barb sounds distinctly familiar, that'll be because he's levelled that gem at her Madgesty before.
"Anyone who lip-syncs in public onstage when you pay 75 pounds to see them should be shot," John said in 2004 when he discovered that Madonna, 46, was up for an award from Q music magazine.
"Since when has lip-syncing been live? Anyone who lip-syncs in public on stage when you pay $134 to see them should be shot.
He added: "That's me off her f****ng Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No."
Madonna's camp "Madonna does not lip-sync nor does she spend her time trashing other artists."
