KEY POINTS:
Elton John has celebrated his 60th birthday with a star-studded party at the cathedral of St John The Divine in Harlem and a record-breaking 60th appearance at New York's Madison Square Gardens.
The quintessential showman is also offering his back catalogue of more than 30 albums available for digital download, starting today, and releasing a new compilation album entitled Rocket Man.
The concert at Madison Square Gardens was due to be attended by 20,000 people, many of them personal guests of the birthday boy.
Sir Elton's record of 60 performances there outstrip the previous record-holder, the Grateful Dead, who notched up 52 performances.
Guests attending the cathedral party included Pierce Brosnan, Liz Hurley and Whoopi Goldberg.
