A Californian company says it is working on a DVD version of The Simpsons movie which will debut in New Zealand with the scent of doughnuts.
Carmine Santandrea, chief executive of ScentAndrea, a Santa Barbara scent-marketing company, told the Los Angeles Times that the DVD will be trialed in New Zealand in November.
The company has already created television screens that can produce smells to match specific images in advertising, but viewers of The Simpsons DVD will be able to smell doughnuts as they watch certain scenes - if they have bought special scent machines.
The LA Times newspaper plans to run a scratch-and-sniff movie advertisement with the aroma of cake icing.
On Sunday, the paper will run a full-page ad for the Fox-Walden film Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium that when scratched will release "the universally beloved frosted cake scent".
The aroma is supposed to remind readers "to be young and have fun".
