KEY POINTS:
Drew Barrymore sent Hugh Grant a letter of support after he was arrested for picking up a prostitute in Hollywood in 1995.
Hugh – who stars with Drew in new romantic comedy Music and Lyrics – was touched to receive the words of comfort from the Charlie's Angels star after he was caught with vice girl Divine Brown on the Hollywood Boulevard in 1995, while dating actress Elizabeth Hurley.
Hugh told Scotland's Daily Record newspaper: "I had two incredibly supportive letters from famous people during my scandal in 1995. One was from Drew, the other was from Frances Ford Coppola. Both apologising for the press coverage and being supportive. I've always loved Drew for that."
Drew admits that, even though she didn't personally know the actor at the time, she felt compelled to offer him some support.
She said: "I wouldn't send anyone I didn't know a letter, but he was so charming. I wrote him a letter and he wrote one back. It was stuck on my fridge for a long time."
In Music and Lyrics Hugh plays a has-been pop star Alex Fletcher, who takes on the task of composing a chart-topping hit for a teen star, despite never having written lyrics in his life.
As Alex struggles, he sparks up an unexpected friendship with his plant lady Sophie Fisher, played by Drew, who becomes an inspiration to him in his music and his private life.
