Cameron Diaz was saved by Drew Barrymore from a row with a man the first time the pair met.
The Charlie's Angels stars, who are now close friends, first met when Cameron was a 16-year-old model and Drew was a 14-year-old hellraiser.
"I first met Drew when she stuck up for me in a Beverly Hills magazine shop when this guy was being aggressive," Cameron told Harper's Bazaar magazine.
"I knew who she was. I wasn't really star-struck, but I felt like I knew her in a different way, as we all do when we watch people on television."
Ever since their initial encounter Drew has always felt protective of Cameron, who she calls "Le Poo".
Drew said: "I still feel very territorial with her."
