KEY POINTS:
Divas, dames and drag artistes will take over Auckland's Viaduct Harbour this Sunday when the annual Wigs on the Waterfront (WoW) event hits town.
More than 50 drag artistes will take part in the event, alongside singers, musicians and other entertainers.
Organiser Wayne Nicholas said past events had attracted more than 14,000 people throughout the day and expects strong numbers again this year, as the event coincides with the International Buskers Festival, also in town this weekend.
Highlights of the day will include afternoon performances by the Caluzzi girls - who will arrive in style aboard a luxury yacht - and the Finale troupe.
But Nicholas says all the day's entertainment will be brilliant, featuring artists from around the country.
Part of the annual Hero Festival, which begins today and runs throughout February, Wigs on the Waterfront is a day-long family friendly event, raising money for the Cartier Bereavement Charitable Trust.
Founded in memory of the late Courtney Cartier, one of Auckland's original Caluzzi girls, the trust provides monetary support for those who pass on from an HIV/AIDS related illnesses, assisting with funeral costs.
This year marks the fifth annual Wigs on the Waterfront event, though last year's performance failed to materialise after bad weather saw three different dates cancelled.
"The area down there is just too slippery for high heels," laughed Nicholas.
"Just imagine the wigs and the make up!"
* Wigs on the Waterfront takes place this Sunday, February 4, from 11am to 5pm. Rain date is Tuesday, February 6 (Waitangi Day).
