US director Quentin Tarantino says he will only make two more films.

Tarantino broke the news during The Hollywood Reporter's Director Roundtable, which included The Martian director Ridley Scott.

"I'm probably only going to make 10 movies, so I'm already planning on what I'm going to do after that," Tarantino told the panel.

"That's why I'm counting them. I have two more left. I want to stop at a certain point."

The director is famous for titles such as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill: Volume's 1 and 2 and Django Unchained.

He is also about to release western The Hateful Eight, starring Kiwi Zoe Bell.

Tarantino continued the discussion with what he planned to do once he stops making films.

"I want to write novels and I want to write theatre and I want to direct theatre," he said.

Although not known to write or direct for the stage, Tarantino said he was keen on adapting his films.

"I actually want to do a theatrical adaptation of Hateful Eight because I actually like the idea of other actors having a chance to play my characters."

The Hateful Eight opens in cinemas on Thursday, January 21.
