After one version leaked online after last month's Comic Con, 20th Century Fox has released the official trailer for their upcoming superhero movie Deadpool.
Starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular hero, the R-rated movie follows Wade Wilson, a cancer-stricken mercenary who gains healing powers after being tricked into being experimented on. He then goes on a revenge-fuelled rampage after the experiments leave him horribly scarred.
Deadpool, also known as the "Merc with a Mouth", first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1991. He has since gained a rabid online following for his fourth-wall breaking antics and over the top sense of humour.
Reynolds first played Wilson back in 2009 in Wolverine: Origins, a representation that got slammed online after they sewed his mouth shut.
The movie promises to make fun of that, as well as taking a swipe at Reynolds equally-derided Green Lantern role.
"Please don't make the super suit green... or animated," Wilson quips, setting the tone following a serious speech setting up the movies premise.
The film co-stars Morena Baccarin and T.J. Miller, who drops some of the trailer's more noteable one-liners.
"You look like an avocado had sex with an older avocado," his character Weasel says about Wilson's new appearance.
Deadpool is scheduled for release February 11 next year, and is currently the only R-rated superhero movie scheduled for release. As the trailer shows, the grittier violence and adult sense of humour will be a breath of fresh air compared to the more mainstream superheroes coming out alongside.
