'Darker' Terry Teo reboot is a hit in the United States

Kiwi TV show Terry Teo will finally get a network screening in New Zealand - as producers are in talks to have it remade in the United States.

The 'darker' reboot of the much-loved '80s series sparked controversy when it debuted not on TV2 as expected but on TVNZ's On Demand platform in July.

A war of words had broken out over whether the show was too mature for younger viewers.

Terry Teo - which received $1.3 million of NZ on Air funding - will launch on TV2 next Sunday at 7pm with a two-hour, double episode. It features strong language, guns and violence.

Despite its PGR rating at home, the new version of Terry Teo, with Kahn West in the lead role, went down a storm with American TV executives when it was shown at the prestigious Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, last month.

Now producer Luke Sharpe is in talks with Los Angeles-based entertainment giant Creative Artists Agency (CAA) who not only want to screen it in the States but also remake a version specially for the American market.

"We are stoked people in New Zealand will at last be able to watch the show together on network TV," Sharpe told the Herald on Sunday.

The cast of the reboot of the popular show includes actress Hanna Tevita, the partner of injured All Black star Nehe Milner-Skudder.

Tevita plays Terry's sister Polly Teo in the show.

Meanwhile, on the back of the interest overseas, Terry Teo scriptwriter Gerard Johnstone is also now working on a "top secret" series for Netflix,.
