Trilogy finale The Dark Knight Rises has opened with a near $2 million box office haul in New Zealand.
That puts it slightly above its 2008 predecessor The Dark Knight but behind its 2012 superhero competition, The Avengers, which brought in $2,038,157 on its opening in late April.
The Dark Knight Rises made $1,969,420 from showing on 157 screens nationwide, making it the ninth-biggest opening at the New Zealand box office.
Last year's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part Two) is the record holder with its $2,912,423 opening which pipped 2003's reigning champ The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
