Fortunately, the 41-year-old got help and entered rehab for drug and alcohol abuse.
When he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while receiving treatment, Stapp was shocked - but relieved.
"It was hard to process," he admitted to People. "There's a stigma associated with it.
"But [my wife] Jaclyn kept telling me, 'Embrace it. We love you.' It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer.
Jaclyn, who married the singer in 2006, said that when she heard the diagnosis, it "made sense".
"I definitely knew there was something going on for years, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was," she explained.
Stapp said that now, "nothing is more important than my sobriety".
People reveals that he is participating in a 12-step recovery program and has a sponsor. Stapp is also taking medication for his bipolar disorder.
In November, Stapp shared a desperate 16-minute video on Facebook, revealing that he was broke and homeless.
"Right now I'm living in a Holiday Inn by the grace of god, because there's been a couple weeks where I had to sleep in my truck," the With Arms Wide Open singer revealed.
The following month, 911 calls made by the star surfaced, in which he could be heard expressing his fears for the safety of his family.
Jaclyn asked a judge in Palm Beach County, Florida to have Stapp admitted to a substance abuse facility and filed for divorce from him.
The beauty queen has since called off the divorce.
Scott and Jaclyn have two children together - daughter Milán, eight, and son Daniel, four - and the singer also has teenage son Jagger from his first marriage.
