It's unclear whether Ice-T's father-in-law had okayed him sending the tweet to his 1.8m followers. The savage tweet prompted a mixed reaction from those on social media, with some applauding him for highlighting the seriousness of a disease that has so far killed more than 274,000 Americans.
"If you think you're immune from Covid, believe me you're not. This virus is unpredictable and if you're the unlucky one then it will RIP through your lungs and have you looking like Coco's dad on oxygen," wrote an ER doctor.
"It's hell when you have to learn the hard way!" said another person.
But others slammed Ice-T for appearing to revel in his father-in-law's misfortune:
"What would cause somebody to post something like this? It totally reads like schadenfreude on your own father in law. Plenty of 'pro-maskers' have met the same or worse fates. We don't celebrate ppl getting sick so we can have our 'told you so' moment. That's your FAMILY. Gross," wrote one person.
"Quite possibly the most whack tweet I ever read," said another.
And another: "This is cold af."
"This is tremendously disrespectful to family," wrote another.
Ice-T's tweet comes as the US approaches 14 million coronavirus cases, by far the most of any country in the world. Despite the deadly virus now running out of control in each of the 50 US states, there is still widespread resistance to wearing masks and taking other simple health measures to limit the spread.
