KEY POINTS:
LOS ANGELES - A judge today refused to restore Britney Spears' custody of her two young children, ruling that they remain in the sole care of her ex-husband Kevin Federline but granting the pop star visitation rights.
Federline's attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan confirmed Britney would be allowed monitored visits with her two sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.
Federline, 29, was present for the lengthy closed-door court session today, but Spears, 25, did not attend.
The new custody arrangement stays in effect until the next hearing on Oct. 26 - and both Federline and Spears will be required to attend, court representative Allan Parachini told People magazine.
"Britney's access to her kids works out to about every other day," Parachini said.
"The visits will not necessarily occur back-to-back."
After the hearing Federline, who was wearing an eye patch, left the court without comment.
Spears lost custody of her two young children on Tuesday (NZT) because she apparently failed to take court-ordered drug and alcohol tests or obtain a valid California driver's license, her lawyer said.
