Coro St star's 'sex abuse' case dropped

Coronation Street star Michael Le Vell will not face charges over allegations that he sexually abused a schoolgirl.

The actor, who has played mechanic Kevin Webster for 28 years, broke down and wept with relief at being told the case against him was being dropped.

However he is also having to come to terms with the break-up of his 25-year marriage.

Le Vell, 46, was arrested at his £775,000 home in September after allegations he had sexually abused a young girl in the past.

After being released on bail he 'strenuously' denied the claims.

The actor, whose real name is Michael Turner, learned on Saturday that prosecutors had decided not to press charges.

A friend said: 'It's been three months of hell for him.

'It's been a struggle trying to keep him sane throughout all of this.'

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case after a thorough investigation.

Le Vell has also had to come to terms with the break-up of his marriage to actress Janette Beverley, with whom he has two children.

The family home in Hale, Greater Manchester, has been put on the market.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'A file of evidence was prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service who decided there was insufficient evidence to charge. No further action will be taken.'
