KEY POINTS:
New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords had to check the internet to find out they had won a Grammy Award.
A glitzy ceremony was held in Los Angeles yesterday but Jemaine Clement said he checked the news online after hearing a rumour the pair had won.
"Then I texted Bret (McKenzie)", Clement told the Dominion Post.
They won in the best comedy album category for The Distant Future.
"It is amazingly flattering, just because of the many great people that have won it, and great people were up for it this year," Clement said.
Other nominees included Harry Shearer of The Simpsons fame and standup legend Steven Wright.
McKenzie said it was a great day for New Zealand musical comedy.
"I wish my grandmothers were still alive. They would be so proud and could call them and say, 'Granny, I've won a Grammy'."
Clement said the award was announced at a separate low-key ceremony yesterday before the main event.
They join an elite group of New Zealanders who have won Grammys including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and Lord of the Rings film maker Fran Walsh.
Flight of the Conchords ended its first season on the HBO cable network in September, and fresh episodes will air later this year.
