KEY POINTS:
American TV viewers will be the first to see Flight of the Conchords but Prime have won the rights to screen the show here.
The HBO comedy, starring Kiwi comedians Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, will premiere in the United States on Sunday night.
Prime plans to screen it later this year alongside the channel's new local sitcom, Paradise, a Gibson Group-produced show about backpackers.
"I thought Conchords would fit really well on Prime," says programmer Karen Bieleski. "HBO product is known for its quality but also for being very smart and quirky, it's that slightly oddball thing we like."
She would not comment on whether there had been a bidding war for the show other than to say Prime "pursued it aggressively".
"It ticked all those boxes: it fit our profile, it would get us attention, it would work with Paradise. It's really exciting."
She knew of the comedians from her days at TVNZ, when the duo first pitched the idea for a TV show. She left soon afterwards, and TVNZ eventually turned them down.
A New Zealand launch date has yet to be set but Paradise will screen at 9.30pm followed by Conchords at 10pm. The pilot episode is at www.hbo.com/conchords.
