KEY POINTS:
The film of a concert in memory of the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti opens at Auckland's Bridgeway and Rialto Cinemas today for a limited season.
The concert was staged last October, before an invitation-only audience, at the famous city of Petra, in southwest Jordan, on what would have been Pavarotti's 73rd birthday. He died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer in September, 2007.
A line-up of luminaries performed on a stage in the spectacular setting under a full moon. They included Pavarotti's Three Tenors mates, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo; Andrea Bocelli; and rock stars Sting, Bono and Celine Dion, all of whom had worked at some time with the big tenor from Modena.
The film is a 90-minute record of many of the acts, interspersed with memories of Pavarotti from the performers, his widow, Nicoletta Mantovani; and Jordan's Princess Haya Bint al-Hussein, under whose auspices the concert was staged.
Funds raised at the concert were donated to the United Nations to assist Afghan refugees.
