China has attacked Sir Elton John for backing dissident artist Ai Weiwei and told fans to boo his next concert.
At the end of a show in Beijing at the weekend Sir Elton, 65, stunned the audience by dedicating the show to Weiwei's "honour and talent".
The sculptor, 55, is a noted critic of the communist regime.
State newspaper the Global Times accused the singer of being "disrespectful" and said his actions could lead to a ban on Western performers.
An editorial stated: "He (Sir Elton) added political content to the concert, which should have been nothing more than an entertaining performance."
