KEY POINTS:
Art + Object is starting the year with a sale to support the family of film art director Ant Sumich (Whale Rider, Xena, Outrageous Fortune), who died last year.
The auction features works by over 60 artists, from Max Gimblett to Seung Yul Oh, John Pule to Gavin Hipkins, Ani O'Neill to Francis Upritchard. A signed work by Jamie Hewlett, the British artist who creates the Gorillaz band artwork, will also be on sale, along with a Crane Brothers tailored suit. Viewings of the works at 3 Abbey St, Newton, open next Tuesday 9am-5pm, and Thursday 9am-2pm, with the sale starting that day from 6.30pm.
Meanwhile, 2007 market share figures published by the Australian Art Sales Digest show A+O recording sales of $3.65 million since its opening last May, 29 per cent of the New Zealand art auction sale total of $12.61 million.
Considering A+O has only been in operation for eight months, that adds up to an even stronger share of 38 per cent. Webb's took $3.29 million and the International Art centre $2 million.
