The Fault in Our Stars has beaten Tom Cruise's new sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow to take the top spot at the New Zealand box office.
Adapted from John Green's best-selling novel, The Fault in Our Stars features Divergent's Shailene Woodley as Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient who falls for Angus (Ansel Elgort), a boy she meets at her support group.
The movie debuted at No.1 over the weekend with $573,889, topping Cruise and Emily Blunt's Edge of Tomorrow, which took second place with $513,073 according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of New Zealand.
The Fault in Our Stars opened on 86 screens locally, while Edge of Tomorrow, which also comes in 3D screenings with higher ticket prices, opened in New Zealand on 128 screens.
It was a similar picture across the Tasman with Fault beating Tomorrow by $A3.776 million to $A3.023 million on its opening weekend in Australia.
