Transgender reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner has stunned fans by revealing she wasn't always an advocate for gay marriage.

In a taped appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' US daytime talk show, the former Olympian, who is transitioning from male to female, confessed she was initially opposed to same-sex marriage when gays and lesbians began fighting for the right to marry.

"I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago ... at first I was not for it. I thought, 'I'm a traditionalist ... I kind of like tradition and it's always been a man and a woman', and I'm thinking, 'I don't quite get it'.

Jenner says as times gone on she has changed her thinking and would never want to stand in front of anybody's happiness.

"If that word marriage is really, really that important to you, I can go with it."

DeGeneres, who is married to her lesbian partner Portia De Rossi, suggested Jenner is still "a little not onboard with it", prompting Caitlyn to insist, "I am onboard".

Meanwhile, in a new clip from her reality show I Am Cait, Jenner reveals she's a big fan of Angelina Jolie's fashion choices after setting up a meeting with the actress' stylist.

"I really need a professional to co-ordinate everything. She does Angelina Jolie and I just love her look. Very casual, very elegant, chic, so I'm dying to meet her."
