Britney Spears was rushed to hospital by ambulance late last night (NZT) after a team of police were called to her home.
Spears was taken to UCLA Medical Centre and was to be placed on a 5150 hold, the involuntary confinement of a person deemed to be a danger to herself or others, according to the celebrity gossip website TMZ.com.
A psychiatrist treating the singer contacted Los Angeles police to set the events in motion, TMZ said, citing "law enforcement sources".
Hours earlier, around 11pm local time, police asked about 20-25 people gathered near the 26-year-old's home to leave, CNN reported.
Officers also went to the home on Monday night after someone reported a swarm of paparazzi trespassing in Spears' gated community.
When they arrived, they did not find anyone trespassing.
