Anne Hathaway must be hoping her Oscar nomination for
Rachel Getting Married
will completely overshadow her performance in this pointless chick flick.
To be fair, it's not Hathaway's fault
Bride Wars
fails to fire. That blame lies with a sloppy script, undeveloped characters, forced relationships (between the girls and their fiances) and a general lack of humour.
Best friends Liv (Hudson) and Emma (Hathaway) have been inseparable since they were seven and share a dream of a June wedding in New York's legendary Plaza Hotel.
Only, once engaged, the two are mistakenly double-booked at the hotel. Neither will give up the date, they stop speaking to each other and develop a ruthless desire to ruin each other's weddings.
While some of their Bridezilla antics are vaguely amusing, there is just nothing endearing about Liv and Emma, and that they're just awful, shallow characters is the main problem with this film.
While both experience personal revelations as a result of the wedding drama it's hastily treated and too little too late - we just don't care or, for that matter, understand. About the only question this film poses is: who would want to marry these girls anyway?
