Bret and Jemaine farewell 'Flight of the Conchords' TV show

Flight of the Conchords has been grounded.

The award winning HBO series that chronicles New Zealand's fourth most popular folk-comedy band will not be returning for a third season.

In a statement published on the Conchords' official website, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement announced they were calling it quits.

The statement said: "We've noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won't be returning for a 3rd season.

"We're very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We'd like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it.

"While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist," the statement said.


Last month Clement told Reuters that he was considering calling an end to the show.

He told the news agency that writing the show took up a lot of time.

"We've got to write the series, but we've also got to write the songs, and just dividing your time into those two writing tasks is really tricky."

The Flight of the Conchords was nominated for an Emmy award for best comedy series but was pipped by 30 Rock. Clement was also nominated for best lead actor in a comedy series.

Despite the end of the TV show, the band is soon to launch a line of related clothing and posters through its website.
