After a bumper opening weekend, Boy is on track to become one of New Zealand's most successful films.
The acclaimed Taika Waiti comedy-drama grossed $607,471 on its opening weekend, which already makes it the biggest local release of recent years, and on track to join 2008's Second-Hand Wedding and last year's Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, which made $1.6 millon and $2 million respectively from their entire seasons in the all-time New Zealand Top 10 list.
It's already close to eclipsing the total local box office take of Waititi's previous film, Eagle vs Shark, which made $848,000 and Boy nearly matched Sione's Wedding's 2006 opening weekend of $630,000. Sione's Wedding went on to gross $4.075 million at the New Zealand box office and become the fourth most successful Kiwi film on domestic release.
Boy, oh boy
