Cissy Houston, the mother of Whitney Houston and grandmother of Bobbi Kristina Brown, says her granddaughter has "global and irreversible brain damage" and cautioned against expecting Bobbi Kristina to regain normal brain function.
Bobbi Kristina, 22, is the only child of Whitney Houston and Bobbi Brown. She was found facedown in a bathtub in her Georgia home Jan. 31 and has been in a medically induced coma since.
But her father Bobby set off a wave of confusion when he reportedly told fans at a concert in Dallas Saturday, "I can say today, my baby's awake. She's watching me." Houston released a statement that contradicts Brown's assertion.
"I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma, she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive," Houston said in a statement.
"Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me. We can only trust in God for a miracle at this time. Keep us in your prayers."
After news of a possible change in Bobbi Kristina's condition made headlines, and Brown's sister Tina said on Facebook that Bobbi Kristina was no longer comatose, Brown's attorney Christopher Brown issued a clarifying statement to Us Weekly: "Bobbi Kristina's condition has changed since moving from Emory University Hospital and there has been improvement. Doctors have indicated that she will have a long life.
"However, Bobbi Kristina is presently embarking on a rehabilitation process and the quality of her life will not be known for years to come."
