"With all those challenges we started to learn the very complicated nuts and bolts about each other. We were each other's biggest support, but in that process, we started to grow closer together as best friends and not as close as a couple."
The duo sold their renovated Sandringham home for $1,335,000 at Villa Wars' live finale in December, giving them a profit of $160,000 - placing them second equal alongside Cat and Jeremy.
Brooke and Mitch won with profit of $190,000, plus winnings of $100,000. Sisters Sarah and Minanne took home $123,000.
Despite the break-up, the pair say there's no drama: they remain close friends and are running a new business specialising in social media together.
But they've given up their North Shore rental together, with Johns moving in with relatives, while Campbell lives with his rugby buddies.
They hope they can be role models for "happy" break-ups, but Johns admits the first few days of being apart from Campbell were tough.
"You spend all your time with someone, then suddenly that person isn't around anymore ... Something just changed between us, but change can be a good thing."
Campbell proposed to Johns in Rarotonga in 2014 after four years of dating. They met in an Auckland nightclub.
He says The Block played a "a positive part" in the pair breaking up.
