Host
Jian Ghomeshi
introduced Thornton’s band, in which the actor plays the drums and sings, and referred to him as an "Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor and director," which infuriated Thornton (complete with huffy eye roll).
When Ghomeshi asked the petulant star when the band formed, Thornton said: "I don't know what you're talking about."
And it all went downhill from there.
Thornton then spent the next twelve minutes giving largely monosyllabic answers to the host's perfectly reasonable line of questioning.
The actor also took offense when Ghomeshi suggested he was passionate about music.
"Would you say that to
Tom Petty?
" asked Thornton, and went on to blast the host for asking questions he'd supposedly been told were strictly off-limits by producers.
A confused Ghomeshi asked, "Are you reacting to the fact that I referred to you as an actor?" to which Thornton replied, "Yeah, I am, since you were instructed not to talk about s**t like that."
He added, "We said, 'Do not talk about s**t like that,' and we also said not to discuss if music is my first love. You wouldn't say that to Tom Petty, would you?"
And the icing on the cake came when Thornton announced that his bandmates would be playing an instrumental tune in the studio - sans drums, because "We don't cart those around at 6 o'clock in the morning," he said.
It's all very reminiscent of actor
Joaquin Phoenix
's recent
spaced-out confab
with TV veteran
David Letterman
. Only hip-flopper Phoenix's stint was actually funny. This is just derriere-clenchingly uncomfortable...
