"Sometimes you sleep through the day and you get up and go, 'I've got a show to do'. And you build up to that moment until you walk out on stage. Then it all makes sense what you're doing out there."
The siblings are back in the Southern Hemisphere and thrilled that after years of touring far-flung places they're kicking off the new year with the St Jerome's Laneway Festival in Auckland on Anniversary Weekend, as well as shows in Wellington and Christchurch.
"New Zealand was probably one of the best shows of our 2014 tour," Julia says of their gig at Auckland's Civic Theatre last July.
"I'm not just saying that because I'm on the phone to you. It was such a delight.
"The audience was so pumped. They were definitely the most enthusiastic crowd."
That gig was the first time the duo had played in New Zealand, and Julia stresses that the long time - years, in fact - it took them to get here was never intentional.
"In our careers and in our lives as musicians, we never really questioned too much about where we went and what we did.
"We were just enjoying ourselves and we were happy that others were mapping out our touring.
"It's a lot of organisation and you just kind of go along with it.
"But I always did think, 'Why are we not playing in New Zealand?'
"So when this got put together, we were so excited.
"Now, after all these years, particularly on the touring side, it is a viable place to go.
"It is three hours from Sydney. It's not like a huge expense to get over there.
"And now that we've had such a good experience there it will definitely be part of our touring schedules.
"Forever!" she says.
Angus and Julia Stone are at St Jerome's Laneway Festival on January 25. They're in Wellington on January 28 and Christchurch on January 30.
