Angelina Jolie sued over directorial debut (+video)

Angelina Jolie's directorial debut has yet to flicker on the big screen, but it continues to court controversy for the star.

Croatian journalist and author James J Braddock (aka Josip J Knezevic) is suing the actress, claiming that her movie, In the Land of Blood and Honey, takes its plot from his book The Soul Shattering, which was published in 2007.

Legal documents were recently filed in federal court in Illinois, reports website RadarOnline.

Jolie's movie tells the fictionalised story of a Serbian soldier and a Muslim woman who fall in love, before they become separated by the 1992 Bosnian War.

Braddock, who is claiming copyright infringement, states in his lawsuit that he met with producer Edin Sarkic - who worked on Jolie's flick - several times in 2008 to discuss his book, "including plot and character development and the story's cultural significance and historical accuracy".

The author claims that those discussions included the possibility of adapting his book - a love story that takes place in a war-torn Bosnia and Herzogovina - into a movie.

Braddock claims there are similarities between his book and Jolie's movie in the lawsuit.

"The Subject Work's main female character is subject to continuous abuse and rape by soldiers and officers in the camp," the lawsuit states.

"In addition to being raped continuously by soldiers and officers, she is forced to become a servant at the camp headquarters, a duty assumed by very few of the captives.

"The Motion Picture's main female character is also subject to continuous rape by soldiers and officers in the camp and subsequently becomes a servant at camp headquarters," the lawsuit continues.

Braddock also names GK Films, the Los Angeles-based production company that financed the film, in his lawsuit.

He also wants unspecified damages for alleged copyright infringement, and is seeking an injunction to block the film's scheduled release on December 23.

Jolie's camp has yet to comment on the lawsuit.

Probed in a new Nightline interview about whether there was any future vow swapping afoot, Jolie dished that their kids - Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5, Knox and Vivienne, 3 - are questioning why their parents aren't hitched.

"The kids asked me the other day and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a 'big cake.' They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies or somebody's, you know, the happily ever after. Shrek and Fiona are married," Jolie said.

"We've explained to them that our commitment when we decided to start a family was the greatest commitment you could possibly have. Once you have six children, you're ... you're committed."

Well, that'll silence the nuptial-nagging set for, oh, all of 10 minutes.
