Last year's Met Gala also caused a scandal for Girls creator Lena Dunham, who made some ill-received comments about being seated next to NFL superstar Odell Beckham Jr.
In her feminist email magazine, Lenny Letter, Dunham wrote: "It was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards".
"He was like, 'That's a marshmallow. That's a child. That's a dog.' It wasn't mean - he just seemed confused."
Dunham was heavily criticised for the remarks and later told a New York radio station: "I just had this whole projected thought process of like, 'Odell doesn't want to be sitting next to me. He doesn't want to be talking to me," she said, according to People.
"'He thinks I'm garbage. He thinks I look like a boy.' And so I thought all of that was coming across, it seemed like I was actually accusing him of some kind of misogyny."
Perhaps one of the biggest scandals that has ever emerged from a Met Gala was the elevator smackdown between Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange.
It all happened at the after-party, held at The Standard hotel's nightclub, the Boom Boom Room, on May 5 2014.
Security footage showed Solange physically attacking Jay Z - who is married to her sister Beyonce - while Bey calmly watched on.
Paparazzi photos of the trio showed the 99 Problems rapper holding his cheek after being slapped by Solange.
In a joint statement, Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange described it as an "unfortunate incident."
"Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred," the statement said.
"They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward ... At the end of the day, families have problems and we're no different."
Much has been speculated about what fuelled the fight, including that Jay Z was flirting with another woman (possibly designer Rachel Roy) at the event and Beyonce was seriously annoyed (the behaviour would later be referenced by Beyonce on her album, Lemonade).
2014 was also the year that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds - then a new couple - packed on the PDA in front of the cameras.
Sarah Jessica Parker was photobombed by a Dior-clad Jennifer Lawrence in 2013 as she posed for photographers on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Wearing a Giles Deacon ball gown, SJP laughed off JLaw crashing her shot with a moment worthy of a Sex and the City episode.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian turned heads that year too when a then-pregnant Kardashian wore a much-memed about floral gown by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci.
The 2017 Met Gala is being held in New York tomorrow, with the theme Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.
Guaranteed to attend are Anna Wintour, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, who are co-chairs of this year's gala.
