Before Madonna was doing her fancy hand movements to Vogue, far finer exponents of voguing were doing their thing too as part of the "house ball" scene that started in Harlem, New York and then moved downtown and into the mainstream.
This collection - another fine offering from the Soul Jazz label - chronicles some of the music that these dancers, who choreographed moves and poses inspired by magazines such as Vogue, danced to. It incorporates a vast range of styles and sounds, taking in the disco soul of Cheryl Lynn's Got To Be Real and Diana Ross's cooing and seductive Love Hangover (which breaks out halfway through), to the more banging and oonst-inspired tracks like Armand Van Helden's 10-minute epic Witch Doktor and the Masters at Work hummer The Ha Dance. There really is only one thing to do then - and that's strike a pose.
