The creme de la creme of modern French music is still saccharine, simple and seductive, if this latest cafe-style compilation is anything to go by. These 29 tracks are not all about regrettes and l'aigle noir but there are traces of those great old ballads that buskers on accordians still send billowing through the Paris Metro system.
Camelia Jordana tosses her husky chanteuse vocals in modern indie rhythms, General Elektriks indulge in some chunky funk and many others opt for English lyrics but tunes by the likes of Sas reflect French music from a bygone era, that at its heaviest, asks to be accompanied by a cigarette and vin rouge and at its lightest, an aperitif.
