Album review: Thomas Oliver, Beneath the Weissenborn

Wellington bluesman Oliver has given his band some time off and headed into the studio with his weissenborn - the lap slide guitar which gave Ben Harper a point of difference - for this album of haunting, gently twangin' instrumentals. Oliver's party piece is playing his boyhood favourite movie theme, Jurassic Park. But liquid melodies of Oliver's own compositions and the delicate resonance of his playing make Beneath quietly captivating. Harper fans should investigate. But if Dad likes a bit of Mark Knopfler or Ry Cooder, here's a father's day recommendation.
