The latest album from the youngest son of the late Nigerian rebel and music maker Fela Kuti is co-produced by Brian Eno, and while Afrobeat is well past its heyday, this sounds fresh and resonant.
You Can Run has a cheeky little fill of blaxploitation-style funk at the beginning before launching into a brassy, swinging and rousing call to arms, and midway through the relentless beat and brass frenzy is pulled back beautifully for the poignant and reflective Rise (about exploitation at the hands of petroleum and diamond companies).
He's done his dad proud, while stamping his own contemporary sound and sentiment on the music.
