Jazz and metal are linked by the fact that when they are played at their best they are both adventurous, fiery forms of music. Alex Skolnick, the guitarist in Californian thrash band Testament, plays both and this is his fourth jazz album.
Rather than hard-out jazz, it's more of a trancey mantra (which gets heavy at times) that the trio conjure up, and there are hints of a world beat on Bollywood Jam.
They are at their best when they keep it heavy and intense because there are jazz-lite moments that are just a bit too soft for a guy from Testament to be playing. But for jazz and metal fans alike it's worth checking out.
