It's been six years since the third volume of Kiwi pop-rock psychedelia, that collection having left the feeling most of the gems had already been polished off in the terrific parts one and two.
But part IV, which comes subtitled: "Heavy Psych, Pop Psych and Sunshine Pop from NZ's Psychedelic Period 1966-1972", seems to have tapped a fresh vein.
True, there's some amusing local cover versions among the 27 tracks -- Tom Thumb brings out the big brass for the Beatles' Hey Bulldog; Gene Pierson puts a Pink Floydian piledriver through the Four Tops' Reach Out; Sebastian's Floral Way goes Velvet Underground on Hendrix's Hey Joe before the band turn into Cellophane and go all Doors-ish on Arthur Brown's Fire.
But there are also of plenty of moments that will have you impressed by the grand musical ambitions and the sense of rediscovery.
Among those tracks to get neatly perplexed by are the four songs here of one Chris Malcolm (two delivered by the Avengers), the soaring Beach Boys pop of Oh What a Day by the New Zealand Trading Company (who started out as Maori showband the Hi Quins) and a demo version of the Fourmyula's Nature which ends this diverting time warp in gently pastoral style.
