Renowned British producer, mixologist and solo artist in his own right, Adrian Sherwood is something of a dub guru. A man who has undoubtedly influenced many of our local proponents of the genre, he also expanded horizons by delving into industrial remixes, and even produced Dave Dobbyn's 2008 album Anotherland.
In celebration of his label On-U Sound's 30th birthday he will be DJing at Auckland's Powerstation on December 16.
Returning to New Zealand are 90s Chicago retro-rockers Urge Overkill, who last graced these shores at the 1994 Big Day Out. They play the Powerstation on March 6. Having come to the world's attention after Quentin Tarantino used their cover of Neil Diamond's Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon in Pulp Fiction, they've got a solid back catalogue of hits like Sister Havana and Positive Bleeding for audiences to power bop along to, along with 2010 single Effigy which was intended to herald their return with an (as yet unreleased) new album. Go for the nostalgia, but be prepared for a couple of new ones perhaps.
Meanwhile, the Auckland Town Hall will be transformed into a skankin' hotbed of dub, soul, roots, and reggae on December 3, as it plays host to The Roots Festival. Organisers are going for an "outdoor" feel - only indoors - with multiple stages and rooms with headliners being local stalwarts House of Shem, 1814, and Cornerstone Roots. Also gracing the main stage will be The Midnights, Tui Sound System, and Dead Fool's Fiesta, while a diverse range of DJs will be entertaining in various bar areas.
