During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, the British actor joked about being hopeful he’d receive a super-expensive Patek Philippe wristwatch from Crowe once filming wrapped on the action sci-fi.
But his hopes were dashed when the Gladiator star’s gift to the 34-year-old came in the form of a simple handshake.
“Young Sergei [played by Levi Miller], he’s given him a wad of cash, like over a grand’s worth of cash – changed this kid’s life. And the other kid, Dimitri [Billy Barratt], he loves him, he’s clearly got a soft spot for this kid because he’s into music and obviously Russell loves his music, so he gives him an electric guitar, like a Les Paul. And so I think, ‘okay, so the bar’s pretty high at this point.’”
Before filming ended, Taylor-Johnson said, Crowe pulled him aside to show him a very pricey Patek Philippe watch worth $500,000, so the British actor thought that was a sign of things to come.
He took the opportunity to tell Crowe the watch company’s slogan is, “You merely look after it for the next generation,” subtly hinting the Oscar winner – who plays his character Sergei Kravinoff’s father, Nikolai, in the film – should hand it down to him.
But as it turns out, Crowe didn’t actually own the watch – it was just on loan.
“He comes over to me and he puts out his hand and I instantly notice there’s no watch. I’m like, ‘okay, here we go,’” Taylor-Johnson said. “And he goes, ‘It was really great working with you, mate.’”
When he casually asked about the missing watch, Crowe told him, “It’s on loan. I have to send it back – it’s half a million dollars!”
Kimmel asked if he was given another gift by Crowe, but Taylor-Johnson replied, “Nothing! Just a handshake!
“But no, he’s a really good dude and he’s fantastic in the movie,” he added.
