MUSIC
Show your support for local rockers Dimmer who are playing at the Kings Arms tomorrow night to raise funds for their trip to the United States, which will see them playing a Chris Knox Stroke gig in New York. The show starts at 9pm, opened by Deer Park and the Faults. Also on the local front, Rent the musical starts today at the Civic, featuring Annie Crummer and (ex-NZ Idol, but do you always have to mention it?) Michael Murphy singing soaring rock ballads penned in the 90s. On the international front Wilco are playing at the Civic on Tuesday.
FILM
Anzac Day always prompts war associations, but perhaps this one is more for the ladies. Dear John opens in cinemas today; it is the story of a couple's seemingly boundless love that is put to the test when the strapping Channing Tatum goes to serve in the Middle East. They write letters - but is that enough to keep the spark alive? Elsewhere, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) stars in French thriller Anything For Her and in Hot Tub Time Machine four goofy guys - John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson (Pineapple Express) and Clark Duke (that 5-star film Kick-Ass) - have a drinking session in a ski resort and wake up to find the clock has wound back about 15 years. Hilarity ensues.
OR ...
Bake some Anzac biscuits. Oats, golden syrup, flour, coconut, butter, baking soda and water and bang 'em in the oven (according to Edmonds). Then take them to your neighbours or your colleagues on Monday to commiserate another year when the memorial fell on Sunday.
TV
Oh Katherine Heigl, we will miss your flighty character at Seattle Grace, but wish you and your family well. As well as Izzie's departure from Grey's Anatomy this week it's MasterChef's final fry-off and there's a new season of Rescue 1, the show that takes viewers on a thrilling helicopter ride-along to car crashes and other acciadent scenes. On a lighter note, it's also the Comedy Festival this week. If you can't get along to the gala opening, watch Rove on TV3 on Wednesday. Same with the Anzac Day events - if you can't get to the dawn services, watch them from home, along with a host of other coverage and documentaries spread across the free-to-air channels.
