TV
This week Rachel Hunter is a guest judge on She's Got the Look (Vibe, Sunday, 7.30pm) - a kind of Next Top Model show for over 35s - and it's an eventful elimination with one contestant having a meltdown, taking off her top, and ranting and raving irrationally. To which our Rach says: "That is the most bizarre thing I have ever experienced in my life". Now, it must have been quite a performance because considering she was shacked up with Rockin' Rod for all those years she surely would have seen some truly bizarre things.
For some dangerous viewing, take to the treacherous Bering Sea when the crab fishermen of Deadliest Catch return (Discovery Channel, Wednesday, 8.30pm); possibly even more frightening will be Real Life: Extreme Male Beauty (TV One, Wednesday, 9.30pm) about the lengths men go to to attain the perfect physique. For more TV highlights see page 24.
MUSIC
If you see a guy with a top hat, shaggy hair, and nose ring wandering down Devon St in New Plymouth then be sure to bowl up and introduce yourself. It's likely to be former Gunners' axeman Slash who headlines the Saturday night concert at the G-Taranaki guitar festival at TSB Stadium. Now, this is just speculation, but on Friday night German guitar god Uli Jon Roth hosts an all-star jam and Slash is a good mate of his, so don't be surprised if the man himself turns up there too.
If wailing guitar solos are not your scene, then check out singer-songwriter Julia Deans at Toto's Montecristo Room on Saturday in support of debut solo album, Modern Fables, and Australian alt-country godfather Bill Chambers, the father of Kasey Chambers, also plays Saturday at the Kings Arms.
MOVIES
Not a busy week at the movies but there's Scott Pilgrim vs the World about a bass player in a band whose has just met the girl of his dreams but has to battle her seven evil exes to keep her; for something more brutal, and for fans of the Saw movies, The Collector, is also opening.
OR...
Well, I could direct you to the annual Erotica Expo, but this is a family magazine so what about checking out the Auckland Zinefest which takes over St Kevin's Arcade just off K Rd on Saturday from 11am-4pm. You can buy zines, but also downstairs at the Wine Cellar there are free workshops and talks from special guest zine experts.
