5 Seconds of Summer's NZ tour still on after pyro stunt turns sour

5 Seconds of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford burnt his face during a pyrotechnic mishap over the weekend, leaving New Zealand fans wondering whether the pop group will make it here for their Thursday night show.

The band had been playing at Wembley Arena when the 19-year-old walked too close to on-stage flamethrowers and set part of his hair on fire.

He was filmed quickly putting a towel to his smoke-engulfed head, but was left with burns to his face and the concert was cut short.

Promoters say there the band will make it here for their scheduled performance at Vector Arena on Thursday night.

Later Clifford tweeted a picture of his face in bandages, saying he was "doing okay".

After receiving clearance from doctors, the British group returned to perform in the same venue the following night - but the pyrotechnics didn't join them.

An official spokesman for 5 Seconds of Summer said: "Michael is recovering well after being given the all-clear by doctors.

"He will join the band on stage tonight at the SSE Arena for their third and final London show.

"Michael and the band would like to thank all the fans, well wishers and particularly last night's audience for their support. There will be no pyrotechnic production for the show this evening."

He took to social media to keep his supporters updated.

The incident followed news that American rockers Foo Fighters had to cancel two dates of their European tour after singer Dave Grohl fell off stage during a performance and broke his leg.
