If you have kids hanging around looking for something to do this week, ask them to choose their favourite Geoff Scott crumble - classic apple, or a hazelnut, honey and pear variation or a more tropical ginger, coconut and pineapple - and they can make it for dessert. They could even try putting their own twist on this Kiwi classic.

Kylee's apple fruit leather is another fun project and uses up the apples that aren't being packed in to lunchboxes during the holidays. You need a good oven for this recipe, one that can maintain a low and even temperature - if the oven is too hot you will end up with apple crisp rather than leather.

For the adventurous, Aaron's Mexican chilli beans will put everyone's chilli tolerance to the test and my favourite recipe this week, Peter Gordon's faina, makes a great alternative to potatoes. I made it with lots of blue cheese and thyme and fried it up to serve with drinks. I have also made it just the way Peter has, with five spice, and served it with slow-cooked pork shoulder to rave reviews.
