Goran Paladin, 34, host of TV One’s Our First Home and co-host and producer of The Sauce on Radio Sport With early starts, late finishes and weekend work, Goran says it is difficult to find the time to eat well and regularly. “If I’m organised I’ll have a good day, but if my organisational skills are lacking, it’s a quick trip to the kebab store or any one of the fine fast food eateries in the Birkenhead/Glenfield area,” he says. Goran has lost 6kg since the start of the year. “I wouldn’t say I did it the right way,” he says. “There have been a lot of long working days without exercise and a sufficient amount of food. Still, it’s nice to know that my pants fit me…”
6:30am
Three Weetbix with a banana and a cup of Milo. In a bit of a rush to get to a voice over session. Afterwards I race home to shower and shave! And possibly make myself some lunch.
12:30
Three rolls with ham, cheese and tomato. A dash of barbecue sauce because I’m feeling adventurous. I’m at my desk at Radio Sport now so I can take my time eating while planning the programme for the day.
3pm
Two muesli bars and a banana. And lots of confectionery. Someone started talking about spearmint leaves from the dairy across the road. So I buy some leaves, sour Coke bottles and party mix to share with my workmates.
7:45pm
Two strips of sirloin steak, fried eggs and a green salad. I made a concerted effort to cook myself dinner tonight. It has been a while but I surprised myself by creating something edible.
Mikki Williden’s quick nutrition fix
Kudos to you to for fitting back into your pants and not buying another pair! Too many men in their 30s turn a blind eye to the expanding measurement of their pants.
The ability to with stand sweets in the afternoon is a product of what you have eaten earlier. Your carb-fuelled morning, with no real source of protein, wreaks havoc with your blood sugar. What people mistake for hunger is not a physiological need to eat due to a lack of calories, but is driven by our blood sugar levels. The body is really good at regulating these so it will send signals to your brain to seek out foods to drive them back up into the normal range. Get rid of the obvious sugar sources in your diet (barbecue sauce can have up to 11g in a tablespoon) and bump up the protein and fat in the earlier part of the day.
Swap the banana on the Weetbix for some chopped nuts and, rather than drinking Milo, save the banana for a coconut cashew coffee smoothie. It will be far more satisfying.
Fruit is awesome but why not chop one piece into some plain yoghurt with coconut threads and a spoon of natural peanut or almond butter? If you are still hungry (and you shouldn’t be, based on the smoothie above), pick up a single serve of nuts from the dairy.
