The Defence Force has switched from using coal to burning Solid Energy wood pellets in its 8MW boiler at the Waiouru Army Base.
Renewable pellets will replace 5300 tonnes of coal annually, cutting CO2 emissions by 10,500 tonnes a year.
Ash from the clean-burning wood pellets is fully biodegradable and can be used as a fertiliser.
