Vodafone leads internet market

Vodafone continues to outperform its rivals in the nationwide broadband market and offers the fastest web-browsing speeds, according to testing service TrueNet.

Since stealing the lead from other internet companies last December, Vodafone has kept the top position in TrueNet tests between January and May.

Telecom came in second and "continues to maintain its consistently quick webpage download time", according to a TrueNet report released yesterday.

TelstraClear's DSL service came in third, despite slowing down between March and May.

However, the results for Slingshot over the first four months of this year were "a little depressing ... with download times being erratic since February".

Orcon appeared to have become slower since the beginning of 2012, TrueNet said, although its performance had begun to "level out".

The report said five internet services (TelstraClear cable, Vodafone, Snap, Xnet and Telecom) consistently managed better than 95 per cent of their advertised internet speeds during May.

However, according to TrueNet "TelstraClear DSL and Orcon both failed to achieve better than 80 per cent of their advertised speed during peak evening hours".

While Vodafone led the copper (ADSL) market, TelstraClear's coaxial cable network - available only in Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch - still offers the fastest service.
